In 1998, Jennifer Niederst wrote the first edition of this very successful book after she found herself spending way too much time chasing down the solutions to HTML problems. From hexadecimal color specs to mouseover scripts, the answers are all out there, but finding the exact one you need can soak up a whole day. “I wrote Web Design in a Nutshell because it was the book I needed–one place to find quick answers to my questions.”

With all that’s changed in the meantime, an overhaul is welcome. This is the rare book for designers that is almost completely nonvisual. It doesn’t show what’s hip in navigational bars or what the coolest colors are. Rather, it gives readers the kind of know-how that can make a difference between someone who just whips up pretty pages with WYSIWYG applications like Dreamweaver and someone who can make those pages cross-platform, cross-browser, fast loading, and accessible to all.

The clear organization makes it easy to locate any specific topic. There are six sections. “The Web Environment” discusses the realities of browser compatibility, display-resolution problems, a useful bit of Unix, and tips for print designers looking to move into Web design. “Authoring” shows how to write accurate and up-to-date HTML, cascading style sheets, and Server Side Includes (like putting the current date and time on your homepage).

“Graphics” brings together all you need to know to make effective use of images (GIFs, JPEGS, PNGs, and animated GIFs). “Multimedia and Interactivity” helps with adding audio, video, or Flash to your site (including some succinct tips on optimization and publish settings). And “Advanced Technologies” covers JavaScript, DHTML, XML, XHTML, and WAP and WML. And there are six useful look-up tables in the appendix, which include HTML 4.0 tags, deprecated tags, attributes, and CSS support across browsers. Web Design in a Nutshell could easily have been titled The Web Designer’s Companion–it’s mighty handy to have around. –Angelynn Grant –This text refers to the Paperback edition.

The Rainbow project is an open source initiative to build a comprehensive content management system using Microsoft's ASP.NET and C# technologies.

Rainbow, available today in 29 languages, allows content authoring to be safely delegated to role-based team members who need little or no knowlege of HTML. Rainbow optionally supports a two-step approval-publish process. 75 plug-in modules are now included in the standard release, including support for an e-store, XML news feeds, Flash, Maps, Newsletter, Surveys, Forums, Document Management, Custom Lists, and more. It's also fairly easy to build your own custom modules using the guidelines provided on the Developer Documentation page.

Rainbow has received more than 156,000 downloads to date and more downloads of the new ASP.NET 2 version are occuring from the new SVN. Rainbow is already in production at many commercial internet and intranet sites.

An End-to-End Sample Application Illustrating Windows Communication Foundation and .NET Enterprise Technologies

This application is an end-to-end sample application for .NET Enterprise Application Server technologies. It is a service-oriented application based on Windows Communication Foundation (.NET 3.0) and ASP.NET, and illustrates many of the .NET enterprise development technologies for building highly scalable, rich "enterprise-connected" applications. It is designed as a benchmark kit to illustrate alternative technologies within .NET and their relative performance.

The application offers full interoperability with Java Enterprise, including IBM WebSphere's Trade 6.1 sample application, and newly provided implementations on Oracle Application Server 10G (OC4J) and Oracle WebLogic Server 10.3 (Oracle implementations included with the download below). As such, the application offers an excellent opportunity for developers to learn about .NET and building interoperable, service-oriented applications.

The new download includes the automated setup for the .NET StockTrader 2.03 and the Configuration Service 2.03, with associated technical documents that explain how to run and reconfigure the .NET StockTrader service-oriented application. Additional documentation in the download provides the steps necessary to implement the Configuration Service 2.03 in your own applications and services for central configuration management; distributed caching; load-balancing and failover across clustered service nodes. The new sample includes:

This is the "patched" version of dxperience and eXpressApp Framework (XAF) v8.3.6
no source code is compiled. I repeat: this is not a compiled version. all the file sizes are the same as the original version.
the modifications are tried to be kept at minimum, so everything should work fine.

what's new:
- patched all assemblies with the same PKT which is used in the previous installers. strong key is included in the installer.
- localized satellite assemblies are compiled and included in the installer
- the generated serial is for dxperience universal subscription. don't bother, it will not work with original assemblies. it will only work with patched version. so you have to install the whole package.
- xpo now supports all ado.net providers that original dxperience package supports. after all it is the same as the original assembly with only several bytes modified.
- patching demo executables is made optional. if you don't choose to patch demo files installation will take less time and only necessary files will be patched.

Directory Isolation = Merged <---------------- this is the always convenient
Sandbox folder name = Data

Deleted the folder "NativeImages_v2.0.50727_32" of .NET 2.0 as according to a Thinstall video demo of thinstalling .NET 2.0 this folder with its file size of contents was not needed at all for Paint.Net to run once built. this saved an impressive 92mb. So instead of the built Thinstall exe size of 110mb with compression=fast now this was cut down to a resulted 48mb total with the same compression=fast buit with the deletion of "NativeImages_v2.0.50727_32" folder (without the quotes)

Easily use the file manager of CubicExplorer to remove or inspect Paint.NET plugin files in the 'Program Files' in 'Paint.NET' virtual folder. As with these virtualizations you SHOULD see a folder 'Paint.NET' in the c:\program files folder which is not actually physically on your own system rather is inclusive in this particular Thinstall virtual made sandbox.

To add plugins you have to start up Paint.NET.exe and then go to 'Open' and from there browse to C:\program files\Paint.NET\Effects and in the 'Effects' folder copy and paste your desired plugin files. they would not be visible as Paint.NET does only opens image files and not any file usually under a 'all' in many application's open dialog.

c:\program files\Paint.NET\Effects ---------------> It is the 'Effects' folder you are looking for. Simply copy and paste any necessary plugins (.dll, zip etc) to this folder directly.

NOTE:
1. CubicExplorer is extremely slow when adding files to the Paint.NET folder to the point of CubicExplorer freezing

2. So use CubicExplorer.exe to launch and go into 'C:\program files\Paint.NET\Effects' to inspect or remove desired plugins

3. CubicExplorer before Thinstall build has been set to always open in the first tab 'C:\program files\' from the onset, for that instant ease without navigating to folders.

4. Copy and paste works smoother than drag n drop of plugin files within the 'Open' dialog of Paint.NET

5. Oh yeah, like myself, try to backup your thinstall sandbox folder every now again (like make .rar file) and in the event of a crash after many times of using a Thinstalled application it is as easy as deleting all the contents inside the sandbox folder. Hey presto

…Client-side reporting means producing reports on a local (client) computer rather than on a central server. When Microsoft (MS) introduced MS Access 1.0 in the early 1990s, producing reports simply and with minimal effort became possible. As we moved through the decade, the era of web reporting raised new challenges as the Web became ever more popular for delivering information. Although it was easy enough to produce reports and display them on web pages, other issues, such as printing attractive reports, were not easy to resolve. Visual Studio now has built-in support for creating professional-quality reports for various clients.
Before VS 2005, Microsoft provided various choices for client-side reporting. The most common is the Crystal Reports (CR) add-in from Business Objects. If you come from the world of Visual Basic 6, then you’ll also know Data Report Designer. With the introduction of Reporting Services (RS) at the client-side with VS 2005, Microsoft has given developers a serious tool for producing reports. Don’t worry if you are already skilled with CR-in Chapter 12, we’ll look at CR and RS in action side-by-side to help you transition to RS.
Efforts by Microsoft to provide an alternative to CR prior to VS 2005 were, at best, filling the blanks and were no serious challenge to the capabilities of CR. The .NET platform with Visual Studio came as a real opportunity to provide a simple architecture to produce clientside reports with access to all sorts of data. This book teaches you how to use VS 2005 and Visual Studio 2008 RS for all your reporting needs through hands-on practice with the software. …First, let’s take a trip down memory lane. Previous releases of Visual Studio were aligned and tied to a specifi c version of the .NET Framework, which itself was aligned with and tied to the Common Language Runtime (CLR) engine (Figure 1):

In 2006 Microsoft broke the mould by releasing .NET Framework v3.0, but crucially it did not release a new version of the CLR or new versions of the language compilers or a brand new version of Visual Studio. .NET Framework v3.0 comprises of four technologies: Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), Windows Workfl ow Foundation (WF) and Windows CardSpace.

Also in 2006, Windows Vista and the 2007 Office System were released, which both are development platforms in their own right. So developers have been looking for a refreshed toolset to properly address those three “platforms”. That is exactly the gap that VS2008 fi lls by offering premier support for .NET Framework v3.0, Windows Vista and Offi ce 2007. A select list of new features for NET Framework v3.0 in VS2008 is: new WPF designer, ClickOnce and XBAP deployment to FireFox, WCF support for an HTTP SOAP-less programming model, syndication support, partial trust for services and JSON serialisation. There is also integration of WF and WCF both with the new Send/Receive activities and also through a new WorkflowServiceHost class.

One of the biggest complaints Microsoft received from customers upgrading from Visual Studio 2003 to Visual Studio 2005 was the lack of backward compatibility. Existing projects had to be upgraded to the new Visual Studio 2005 and .NET 2.0 formats, and could not be opened again in Visual Studio 2003. This made it more difficult for organizations who wanted to incrementally upgrade their environments. Microsoft took notice and made sure that the transition from Visual Studio 2005 to Visual Studio 2008 was less painful by making the build system compatible with the .NET Frameworks 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5. Further, existing solutions can continue to be developed in Visual Studio 2008 while still using the .NET Framework 2.0.
Until now, developers independently determined their code’s complexity and maintainability. This lack of standardized metrics often resulted in unwieldy code and less than ideal productivity. To help address this problem, Visual Studio 2008 Team System Development Edition includes Code Metrics support. You can opt to analyze a single project or an entire solution, and the Code Metrics Results window displays key metrics such as the maintainability index, cyclomatic complexity, depth of inheritance, class coupling and the number of lines of code.

Paint Dot NET 3.30

Paint.NET is free image editing and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple tool for photo and image editing. The programming language used to create Paint.NET is C#, with a small amount of C++ for installation and shell-integration related functionality.

Paint.NET can be used to enhance and clean up your photographs. Using the Clone Stamp tool, the power lines that criss-crossed in front of the Space Needle were carefully removed. Other operations were performed that had the effect of smoothing out the image without blurring it, adding some “bloom” (glow), and increasing the contrast.

FEATURES:

Simple, intuitive user interface
Every feature and user interface element was designed to be immediately intuitive and quickly learnable without assistance. It is also designed to be immediately familiar to users of the original MS Paint software that comes with Windows.

Layers
Usually only found on expensive or complicated professional software, layers form the basis for a rich image composition experience. You may think of them as a stack of transparency slides that, when viewed together at the same time, form one image.

Powerful Tools
Paint.NET includes simple tools for drawing shapes, including an easy-to-use curve tool for drawing splines or Bezier curves. The Gradient tool, new for 3.0, has been cited as a huge improvement over similar tools provided by other software. The facilities for creating and working with selections is powerful, yet still simple enough to be picked up quickly. Other powerful tools include the Magic Wand for selecting regions of similar color, and the Clone Stamp for copying or erasing portions of an image. There is also a simple text editor, a tool for zooming, and a Recolor tool.

Unlimited History
Everybody makes mistakes, and everybody changes their mind. To accommodate this, every action you perform on an image is recorded in the History window and may be undone. Once you’ve undone an action, you can also redo it. The length of the history is only limited by available disk space.

Special Effects
Many special effects are included for perfecting your images. Everything from blurring, sharpening, red-eye removal, distortion, noise, and embossing are included. Also included is our unique 3D Rotate/Zoom effect that makes it very easy to add perspective and tilting.
Adjustments are also included which help you tweak an image’s brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, curves, and levels. You can also convert an image to black and white, or sepia-toned.

Open Source and Free
Paint.NET is provided free-of-charge, and the source code (all 133,000 lines of it) is also available for free under generous licensing terms. The bulk of Paint.NET is written in C#, with only a small amount of code related to setup and shell-integration written in C++.

About the Author
